VN-Index records biggest daily gain in half-month

The Vietnamese stock market opened the new week on a positive note, with the VN-Index edging closer to the level of 1,120 points.

On the Hồ Chí Minh Stock Exchange (HoSE), the VN-Index rose 14.6 points, or 1.32 per cent, to 1,117.66 points. This was the biggest daily gain in 15 sessions.

Last week, the lack of support from blue-chip stocks was the main reason why the benchmark VN-Index could not accelerate and the gains only fluctuated below 5 points per session.

However, on Monday's morning trade, the group of blue-chip stocks all performed well and lifted the market.

Entering the afternoon session, the market continued a choppy trading trend and closed at the highest price of the day, confirming the second strongest increase in the last month of the year.

On the southern bourse, the breadth was positive with the number of winners surpassing that of losers by 255 to 57.

Liquidity showed signs of improvement but stayed at low levels. In particular, the matching value on HoSE reached over VNĐ12 trillion (US$496 million), equivalent to a volume of 551 million shares.

The VN30-Index also increased by 14.41 points, or 1.31 per cent, to 1,111.86 points. In the VN30 basket, up to 29 stocks advanced while only one ticked lower.

Most stocks across all the sectors were in the green, led by Masan Group (MSN). Shares of the company soared 5.4 per cent on Monday.

It was followed by Vietcombank (VCB), BIDV (BID), PV Gas (GAS) and Vinhomes (VHM). All the stocks gained at least 1.1-2.23 per cent.

Securities, transportation and information technology stocks also performed well, such as VNDirect Securities Corporation (VND) up 0.93 per cent, VIX Securities Company (VIX) rose 1.2 per cent, Gemadept Corporation (GMD) surged 7 per cent and FPT Corporation (FPT) increased 1.5 per cent.

On the Hà Nội Stock Exchange (HNX), the HNX-Index closed Monday at 229.45 points, up 1.18 points, or 0.52 per cent.
