Vietnam’s seafood export reaches $10bn for first time

Vietnam’s seafood export reached a turnover of US$10 billion for the first time in November and is expected to climb to $11 billion by the end of the year.

Truong Dinh Hoe, secretary general of the Vietnam Association of Seafood Exporters and Producers (VASEP), shared some good news about the country’s seafood export during a seminar on the fisheries industry in 2023, organized in the Mekong Delta city of Can Tho on Saturday.

Vietnam's seafood export has fully recovered after the COVID-19 pandemic, Hoe said.

The export turnover reached $10 billion by the end of November and is expected to hit $11 billion by the end of 2022, he elaborated.

The VASEP will organize a ceremony in Ho Chi Minh City next month to celebrate Vietnam’s seafood export reaching the $10 billion milestone for the first time.

Shrimp export earned $4.3 billion, up 30 percent year on year, while pangasius export exceeded $2 billion, up more than 80 percent.

The tuna product export turnover surpassed $1 billion for the first time.

In general, the exportation of all seafood products grew at a double-digit rate, from 18 to 77 percent.

Despite the COVID-19 pandemic, seafood businesses proposed to the government that aquaculture activities be maintained, enabling a rapid recovery during the post-pandemic period, Hoe explained.

It is necessary to set a target of $20 billion in seafood export in the coming time because the global demand is still very high, he continued.
