Many farming cooperatives aim to work with Big C

More than 150 agricultural cooperatives in northern Vietnam on April 9 took part in a conference on connecting farm produce consumption with Big C’s modern retail chain in Vietnam. The high participation bolstered the cooperatives’ demand for connections with retail chains.

The conference was co-organized by the Domestic Market Department under the Ministry of Industry and Trade, the Department of Cooperatives and Rural Development under the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, and Big C Vietnam.

The first organization of the conference was aimed at giving State management agencies, retail distributors and cooperatives the chance to exchange experiences and discuss policies related to cooperative methods, farm produce consumption connection and product consumption, as seen in the Big C supermarket chain. In addition, the conference would bring in more efficient cooperation between cooperatives and the retail firm.

Speaking at the event, Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Tran Thanh Nam noted that the number of cooperatives in dire need of connections with modern retail chains, particularly with Big C, is on the rise.

Nam stated that the conference would address the demands of both cooperatives and retailers. Accordingly, the retail firms will have an adequate and safe input material source, while the cooperatives will successfully access stable consumption markets.

The role of cooperatives and retail firms is an important bridge linking farmers and households with the market in the process of production using value chains, Nam added.

In recent years, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development has launched multiple programs such as “Developing 15,000 effective farming cooperatives” and has built Decree 98 on production connection in an effort to enhance the connection between farm produce production and consumption, he said.

Khuc Tien Ha, director of Big C Thang Long, noted that Big C was always ready to support producers, farmers and cooperatives in entering the modern retail market, from making a contribution to the consumption of agricultural products at various localities nationwide to building brands and raising the value of Vietnamese farm produce.

Ha remarked that Vietnamese products account for 96% of the total goods being sold at his supermarket chain, adding that as many as 40 cooperatives have created a connection with Big C.

A representative of Big C Vietnam noted that the firm has enhanced its focus on providing products with clear origins, standard goods, products with labels, specialties from various provinces, seasonal products and local farm produce, which is expected to open the door for cooperatives to team up with Big C to expand their consumption market.
