VN-Index fails to overcome 1,000 points

The benchmark VN-Index again failed to overcome the 1,000-point threshold in Thursday’s morning trade following the slowdown of banking and energy stocks.

On the Ho Chi Minh Stock Exchange, the VN-Index edged up just 0.2 per cent to 997.55 points.

On the Ha Noi Stock Exchange, the HNX-Index inched up 0.1 per cent at 114.31 points.

Banking and oil and gas stocks which boosted the market in the early morning trade slowed down towards the end of the session under high selling pressure.

PV Gas (GAS) and PetroVietnam Drilling and Wells Service (PVD) maintained growth of over 1 per cent each but PetroVietnam Technical Services (PVS) and PetroVietnam Coating (PVB) increased by less than 0.5 per cent.

Petrolimex turned to lose 0.14 per cent.

Among banks, only Vietcombank (VCB), Techcombank (TCB) and VPBank (VPB) gained value, Vietinbank (CTG) and Military Bank (MBB) closed flat. BIDV (BID) decreased.

The market breadth was neutral with 188 stocks rising, 183 declining and 372 closing unchanged on the two exchanges.

A total of 136.6 million shares worth combined VND3.05 trillion (US$130.7 million) were traded in the two markets.

The afternoon trade starts at 1pm.
