ABB factory in Vietnam inaugurates solar power installation

ABB has installed a 75 kWp solar power installation to inject more than 50kW of clean power into its high-voltage and distribution solutions factory in the northern province of Bac Ninh.

Demonstrating solar capabilities while also reducing its own environmental impact, ABB recently inaugurated a 75 kWp solar photovoltaic (PV) installation at its high voltage and distribution solutions factory in Bac Ninh province in Vietnam. The electricity generated will be used to power a wastewater treatment system, a canteen serving more than 200 people, and part of the factory’s lighting.

Earlier this year, ABB also deployed its own smart technologies to commission the wastewater plant at the factory premises. Now the factory has an even lower impact on the surrounding environment by running on clean energy.

“The Vietnamese government is making significant moves to deploy renewable energy. ABB is committed to drive the Vietnamese society towards sustainability. We share this vision and are glad to show our commitment by using such clean energy technologies in our own facilities,” said Brian Hull, general director of ABB in Vietnam.

The key components of the system include ABB three-phase solar inverters (TRIO-27.6, TRIO-TM-50.0), an ABB Weather Station (VNS800), and an ABB smart ACB Ekip—technologies that use ABB Ability™ digital capabilities to assure optimal performance with high automation while ensuring cost and space savings.

ABB solar inverters are used to convert direct current generated by the solar panels into high-quality alternating current that can be fed into the power grid. ABB’s new TRIO-TM-50.0 is modular, with three separately wired and configurable modules, a DC side module, an AC side module, and the inverter module for easy installation and maintenance. Thanks to the built-in Web User Interface (WUI), all the inverters are controlled, maintained, and monitored remotely through any web-enabled device (smartphone, tablet or PC). Global service expertise to support and troubleshoot is available remotely.

The ABB VSN800 Weather Station was installed to automatically monitor site meteorological conditions and PV panel temperature in real-time, transmitting sensor measurements to the ABB Ability™ platform.

ABB’s smart ACB Ekip enables the renewable energy to be seamlessly integrated with the existing grid supply. The systems also has built-in load shedding, monitoring, and protection features, thus optimising operations and maximising system uptime.

All the data is available in the cloud, providing end-to-end real-time visibility for the entire installation. The flexible and secure software platform gives facility supervisors the right tools to drive improvements in productivity, quality, and compliance.

Along with many customers, ABB is utilising its technologies in its own factories in Vietnam, presenting how technology can secure a long-term profitable future. “With this solar power installation, we are able to demonstrate ABB technologies’ ability to operate comfortably in the challenging Vietnamese weather and allows us to save energy, support peak hour demand, and reduce dependence on the grid,” said Doan Luong Huy, ABB High Voltage Products Factory’s general manager.

ABB started its operations in the country in 1993. In the 25 years since, it has grown to be a reliable partner in the field of technology, providing turnkey solutions and services in the market. In addition, ABB facilities manufacture transformers, high-voltage components, and medium-voltage power products for customers across the globe. It employs some 900 employees across Hanoi, Bac Ninh, Danang, and Ho Chi Minh City.
