Fresh market opens ahead of new Thongkhankham Market launch

Lao World Public Company (Lao World) has opened a fresh market on the first floor of the new Thongkhankham Market after construction of the six-story complex began in 2014.

The new market and shopping complex comprises 18,000 square metres of retail outlets and parking and will officially open at the beginning of next month.

Speaking at the soft opening ceremony, the company's Chairman Mr Sakchai Vongmalasith (Peter Chan) said the launch of the fresh market zone on the first floor was an initial test before the official opening ceremony on May 6.

Construction of the new complex began in 2014 and is basically finished but needs a little bit more time to finalise the installation of essential items inside the building, he said.

According to an official at the new Thongkhankham Market, a total of 375 tables in the fresh market have been booked by vendors.

On the same floor, more than 200 booths are also available for the sale of other products, he said.

However, an official in charge of the booth reservation office, Mr Sommay Sisomboun, said he was unable to reveal the actual percentage booked in the whole building as that would be announced at next month's official opening ceremony.

Today's opening relates to the first floor, which is divided into two zones, one for a fresh market and the second for the sale of other products, he said.

The new Thongkhankham Market is one of the largest retail developments in Vientiane with Lao World having similar complexes in Savannakhet and Champassak provincial capitals.

This market will be one of the most modern in Laos with ample parking, well-designed drainage and fire extinguishing system.

The market will also house shops selling all types of consumer goods along with fresh food under the same roof.

Lao World Public Company has invested US$30 million to build the new complex after the old market was destroyed by fire over four years ago.

Apart from shopping centres, Lao World Group has investments in the fields of agriculture, engineering, construction, hotels and tourism in Laos.
