Sixth five-star resort inaugurated on Vietnam’s Phu Quoc Island

Local realty developer Sun Group and international hotel operator Marriott International opened Saturday a new five-star ecotourism resort on Phu Quoc, bringing the total number of super-luxury hotels on the southern Vietnamese island to six.

The JW Marriott Phu Quoc Emerald Bay Resort & Spa, located on Khem Beach on the southern side of the island, also marked the debut of Marriott International in the resort business in Vietnam.

Designed by renowned architect Bill Bensley, known as the “King of Exotic Resorts,” the resort features a mix of 244 rooms, suites, apartments, and villas.

Sun Group vice president and general director Dang Minh Truong said the JW Marriott resort is the first of a series of projects the company is developing in that part of the island.

Other projects include Premier Village Phu Quoc Resort, Premier Residences Phu Quoc Emerald Bay, a cable-car system and a theme park on Hon Thom islet.

Phu Quoc, a district administered by the southern province of Kien Giang, has emerged as a popular destination for both local and international tourists in recent years.

Truong expressed his hope that the JW Marriot Phu Quoc Emerald Bay resort would contribute to the development of Phu Quoc’s tourism industry, as well as that of Kien Giang.

Phu Quoc is expecting to receive a total of 1.4 million tourists this year, according to the district administration.

The Sun Group facility represents the sixth five-star resort to be developed on Phu Quoc Island, and the first in its southern commune.

Sun Group has been the developer behind many popular tourist destinations in Vietnam, such as Ba Na Hills Mountain Resort in the central city of Da Nang and the Fansipan Legend in northern Lao Cai Province.

Based in Maryland, in the U.S., Marriott International is the world’s largest hotel company with nearly 6,000 properties in 120 countries and territories.
