Wooden household goods usable, producer confirms
Some Vientiane residents have recently bought bowls, spoons, chopsticks and plates made of small pieces of soft and hard woods and are wondering if these goods are usable or if they are purely for decorative purposes.
“I wonder about this kind of product; once I bought a wooden spoon at a handicraft shop in Vi entiane. I used it to apport ion out cooked rice. Obviously, I could see a colour in it but I am not sure if it was a natural or human-made colour,” a local resident in Xaysettha district who asked not to be named said recently.
Currently a wide range of products made of wood are on sale at various market fairs and the handicraft shops in Vientiane. Most importantly, they are attractive to more domestic and foreign buyers, and almost all of these wooden products are made of reused wood and small parts of trees.
These kinds of goods draw attention from both local and foreign buyers. Additionally they are a good way of utilising waste wood as value-added finished products.
The owner of Houmpheng Wood Han dicrafts in Xaythany district, Mr Houmpheng Kom machanh told Vientiane Times that his factory also produces these kinds of wooden products, ranging from wooden spoons to big pieces of finished furniture for sale both domestically and internationally.
“We make household items from small pieces of wood including soft and hard woods. Also, our customers include Lao people and foreigners. Almost all of our products do not contain colour but some products do - it depends on the demand of buyers,” he said.
He also confirmed that his household products made of wood can be used in daily life.
“Buyers can make sure it is safe for their health to use these it ems. They can ask for confirmation from venders while buying the products,” Mr Houmpheng noted.
He said that the use of small pieces of wood to produce small items means it reduces the use of big trees in the wood processing industry and it is also important to add greater value to small products.
One piece of product at Houmpheng Wood Handicrafts sells for anywhere between 5,000 kip to 200,000 kip per item.
The Chinese buyers are still a prior destination for his wooden goods when regular exporters come to buy at his company every three months or so to take the goods back to China.
