Lao gem and jewellery traders prepare to polish trade relations
Lao gem and jewellery traders will travel to Vietnam this November to foster closer relationships and cooperation to enhance trade and product quality among AEC member nations within the gems and jewellery industry.
They will attend the 5th AEC+8 Gems and Jewellery President Summit, taking place in Ho Chi Minh City from November 5-7, at the invitation of the Vietnam Gemstone Jewellery and Art Craft Association.
The theme of the summit is ‘Advance Future Gem and Jewellery Industry' through a Gem and Jewellery Queen Contest, including Jewellery Design and a Beauty Queen. The summit aims to build on the progress made during the previous summit.
It also aims to form partnerships among leading associations, producers and traders in various areas of Asean to realise the full potential when the AEC take full effect this year, creating a single marketplace and production hub.
President of the Lao Gem and Jewellery Traders' Association, MrPhouvongPhamisith, spoke with Vientiane Times this week, saying “Some of our gem and jewellery traders will bring their products to display at the summit.”
MrPhouvong said the summit is the largest international fair of its kind in Vietnam and encompasses traders and high profile producers in the field of handicrafts, jewellery and gemstones from the Asean+8 countries.
“Participating in this event will give Lao gem and jewellery traders the chance to find new markets and business partners, not only in Vietnam but also in Europe,” he said.
“We now have access to Chinese and Thai markets after our association established relations with the Thai and Chinese Gem and Jewellery Association after participating in many events.”
MrPhouvong said the Lao and Chinese associations agreed to share their technical expertise in gem and jewellery production.
At the upcoming summit, some Lao traders will exhibit high quality hand-made products designed and produced in Laos. Their designs are in both Lao and fusion styles, said MrPhouvong.
MrPhouvong hopes the summit will allow the association to deal with more Vietnamese businesses and make contact with similar associations from both Asian and European countries.
Also attending the summit will be representatives of the Party and State of Vietnam, ministries and individuals, top businesses in the field of jewellery and precious stones as well as outstanding associations in Vietnam in the past five years. In addition, 38 international guests from 18 countries and territories will be present.
The Lao association has around 90 members, some of whom are working with Thai and Chinese businesses to supply markets there.
Lao gem and jewellery products are also popular in other countries around the world, said MrPhouvong.
