Capacity building to boost private sector, Japanese investment
The project on capacity building for supporting private sector development and Japanese investment in Laos will continue to develop human resources and promote private sector ventures and Japanese investment in Laos.
The project coordination committee from the Lao-Japan Human Resource Development Institute (LJI), the National University of Laos (NUOL), Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) and Japanese Embassy to Laos last week gathered at the university to review the project implementation over the last six months and discussed the plan for the next six months.
The meeting was chaired by Vice President of the National University of Laos (NUOL), Associate Prof. Dr Saykhong Saynasine, and JICA representative to Laos, Ms Saeda Makimoto.
The project was carried out through the LJI with cooperation between JICA and the NUOL. It is slated to run from September 2014 to September 2019, aiming to strengthen, promote and develop the various economic sectors in Laos to integrate with the region, especially in the areas of business and culture.
Under the project, the Lao-Japan Human Resource Development Institute (LJI) supports the expansion of higher technology education for strengthening the private sector and promoting market-oriented economic reforms.
Over the next six months, the institute will continue to operate activities for business and culture promotion and teaching curriculum development with cooperation from the Lao National Chamber of Commerce and Industry to provide consultation to Japanese companies in Savannakhet province.
Next month, the institute plans to organise a job fair in order to promote job opportunities working with Japanese companies in Laos. The event will be held at the institute.
In June, the institute also plans to hold a technical meeting on the topic “business planning” with three countries, Laos, Cambodia and Thailand and plans to cooperate with the Honda Foundation to select students of the NUOL as winners of the Honda Young Engineer and Scientist's Award (YES award) 2016.
Over the last seven months from September 2015 to March this year, the institute was able to implement the activities according to the project plan, especially the business management and cultural exchange and joined with Japanese experts in improving the activities of the project.
The institute also helped to improve the employee and leading committee structure and sought funding to allow employees to develop themselves by updating their skills within the country and overseas.
The institute has also cooperated with JICA on administration and curriculum development within the institute, which included responding to the demands of business and other organisations.
Progress has been made in developing a Japanese language curriculum and the organising of cultural exchanges with Japanese universities while the institute recently received its eighth batch of master's degree students.
In January, the institute organised the annual Lao-Japan cultural festival to promote both nations' culture and last month held the 13th Japanese speaking competition. Some 82 students from eight Japanese institutes participated in the competition as well as revealed activities and cultural exchanges at Bornangoua Secondary School.
