Vietnam stocks end mixed, auto stocks advance

Vietnamese shares ended mixed on the two local exchanges this morning, while the automobile industry drove up the markets.

The benchmark VN Index on the HCM Stock Exchange dropped 0.1 per cent to close at 571.56 points, and the HNX Index on the Ha Noi Stock Exchange closed almost unchanged at 80.32 points.

The automobile industry made good gains this morning. Hoang Huy Investment Services JSC (HHS) added one per cent, Truong Long Auto and Technology JSC (HTL) jumped 4.6 per cent, and Sai Gon General Service Corporation (SVC) advanced 4.2 per cent.

Energy stocks also rose. PetroVietnam Gas Corporation and PetroVietnam Drilling and Well Service Corporation (PVD) inched up 0.2 per cent and 0.3 per cent, respectively.

However, insurance companies and brokerage firms pulled down the markets.

The insurance sector was pulled down by BIDV Insurance Corporation (BIC), Bao Minh Insurance Corporation (BMI) and PVI Holdings (PVI), which fell 1.5 per cent and 0.4 per cent.

HCM City Securities Corporation (HCM), Sai Gon Securities Incorporation (SSI) and Sai Gon-Ha Noi Securities Corporation (SHS) also caused the brokerage sector to fall.

Other large-cap stocks that also declined included dairy firm Vinamilk (VNM), IT company FPT Corporation (FPT) and confectionery producer KIDO Group (KDC).

Both local markets traded more than 112 million shares, worth VND1.53 trillion (US$68 million).
