First meeting of Asean officials for SEOM begins

Senior economic officials from the Asean countries are gearing up to discuss several issues as they prepare for the 47th Asean Economic Ministers Meeting (SEOM 47) and other important meetings to be hosted in Laos.

A series of meetings, which kicked off in Vientiane yesterday, will end on January 22, with the aim of facilitating discussion between Asean members and Asean with the EU in the field of economic cooperation and a presentation of the AEC Blueprint from now until 2025.

The first meeting was held in Vientiane yesterday and saw a number of senior economic participants from nine countries review the past progresses of economic cooperation and discuss the plan for 2016.

Preparations for SEOM 47 included many important meetings b etween Asean members and delegations from the European Union (EU).

At the same time, the meeting between Asean senior economic officials and EU officials aimed to con tinue to exchange details on economic cooperation between the two sides.

During the period from January 18-22, there will be five different meetings, which is in relation to the preparations for SEOM 47.

As the chair of Asean 2016, Laos is set to host numerous meetings and conferences throughout the year.

Director General of the Foreign Trade Policy Department under the Ministry of Industry and Commerce Dr Laohoua Cheuching, who is also Laos' Senior Economic Official, chaired the meeting yesterday.

Senior officials from the Asean Secretariat were also invited to attend at the meeting.
