Shares climb on bright market prospects

Shares extended gains on the two bourses, as bright forecasts of the market's uptrend continued to prop up large-cap shares.

On the HCM Stock Exchange, the VN-Index edged up one per cent to close at 598.22 points, while the HNX-Index on the Ha Noi Stock Exchange inched up 0.2 per cent to end at 81.31 points.

Almost 100 million shares worth VND1.35 trillion (US$60.3 million) were exchanged on the two markets.

Insurer Bao Viet Holdings (BVH) and dairy giant Vinamilk (VNM), two of the 10 largest stocks by market capitalisation, were among the largest gainers. BVH jumped 3.3 per cent, while VNM increased 1.9 per cent.

Other large-cap oil and gas stocks such as PV Gas (GAS), PetroVietnam Technical Services (PVS) and PetroVietnam Drilling Mud (PVC) kept rising, after reports said these companies had posted positive business results in the third quarter.

Real estate companies also attracted heavy investment. Five of the 10 most-active stocks this morning were from this sector, among which FLC Group (FLC) and Tan Tao Investment Industry Corp (ITA) were temporarily leading with almost five million shares being traded on each code.

FLC climbed 2.8 per cent and ITA rose 1.5 per cent.

The overall market condition was rather good, with 30 per cent of the 677 trading stocks advancing, while 22 per cent fell.

The afternoon session will begin at 1pm.
