Inland container terminal for Thakhek SEZ

Jo Bounmy Group International Transport Vessel ICD Co., Ltd has received a land concession of 114 hectares in Thakhaek Specific Economic Zone (SEZ) in Khammuan province for the construction of an inland container depot (ICD).

A ground breaking ceremony for the project took place on Tuesday at the zone in the presence of provincial Deputy Governor Mr Somchai Phetsinuan, the president of Thakhaek SEZ's executive board Mr Daolay Keoduangdy, and the company president Ms Bounmy Bangonsengdeth.

Jo Bounmy is one of 21 companies that have invested in Thakhaek SEZ after the company recently received a land concession of 114 hectares from the government.

The company will own the project site for 75 years and so far it has already paid compensation for the land, said a representative from the company Mr Siphanang Basikhai.

Mr Siphanang said the project will be separated into different phases; in the first phase the company will begin construction of the ICD on an area of 15 hectares within Zone B.

This project is expected to cost around US$5 million, and should reach completion by February next year, after the ground breaking ceremony, he added.

Mr Siphanang explained that investment in the ICD project aims to develop the area as a facility for handling and transporting passengers, goods and freight.

It aims to provide effective and efficient management and operation of the planned ICD, with details on the movements, maintenance, packing, transfer and transport and service of goods and supply information provided in line with the requirements of customers.

The project also has a large parking space, goods transit storage, as well as inbound and outbound goods transport.

In addition, it will also provide a stable income source for Khammuan province as well as contribute to the national budget and also prepare for trade and service integration with Asean member countries, he said.

Vice President of Thakhek SEZ's executive board Mr Nongsavanh Thammavong said Thakhek SEZ is one of the priority development projects of Khammuan province as well as the government, aiming to develop an area of some 1,035 hectares near the Third Lao-Thai Friendship Bridge to become a new modern urban trade and services centre.

The zone is designed to attract domestic and foreign investment and increase the pace of economic growth while generating job opportunities for local people.

In addition, there is an incentive policy on land concessions, tax exemptions depending on business types, and a one stop service at the zone, as well as other promotional privileges which were indicated in the relevant laws and regulations, he added.
