Lao gov't seeks business input on economic development
The government is seeking to boost cooperation with businesses and entrepreneurs in Laos, seeking their constructive opinions on the national socio-economic development plan as they play a significant role in job creation.
As part of preparations for the 12th High-Level Round Table Meeting to be held in Vientiane on November 27, the Lao National Chamber of Commerce and Industry (LNCCI) held a consultative meeting last Friday, aiming to gather the ideas of the business sector.
Representatives from the business sector, foreign business units and the government also attended the meeting.
The results of this meeting will be considered for the agenda for discussion at the roundtable meeting.
Speaking at the meeting, Deputy Director General of the International Cooperation Department under the Ministry of Planning and Investment, Mr Sisomphone Phetdaoheuang, said the gathering would enable participants to share constructive ideas, which will be further discussed at the roundtable meeting.
“The LNCCI has to select representatives of five business units, including one foreign trade chamber in Laos and submit the names of the selected units to the secretariat of the roundtable meeting,” he said.
Meanwhile LNCCI Secretary General Ms Sengdavone Bangonesengdeth noted that the business sector has played a significant role in terms of its contribution to socio-economic development over the past years.
“Recently the business sector was mentioned by the previous roundtable meeting for its outstanding performance in terms of socio-economic development, especially concerning jobs,” she said.
Ms Seng davone said Laos has almost 4,000 business units nationwide and seven foreign trade chambers in Laos as they are prioritised to boost job recruitment initially.
At next month's roundtable meeting, the Vientiane Declaration on the Partnership for Effective Development Cooperation will be launched and the meeting will also consider the new Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
The meeting will be held under the theme “Enhanced Partnership for Effective Implementation of the 8th National Socio-Economic Development Plan (NSEDP) – Achieving the Least Developed Country graduation criteria by 2020.”
Over 300 delegates from the government and development partners, donor governments, non-profit organisations, national non-profit associations and the private sector are expected to attend the meeting.
From now on, the roundtable meeting will take place every five years, synchronising with the NSEDP cycle, to review the past implementation of the national action plan, strategic plan and agreements on development priorities and the provision of funds and assistance by development partners.
