VN shares extend rally as US stocks jump

Strong buying continued to push up shares in the two markets this morning, propped up by a powerful rebound on the United States stock market.

Dow Jones added almost four per cent late yesterday, the highest jump in the past four years, as investors expected the United States Federal Reserve to delay its rate hike next month, following a pessimistic forecast of the world's second-largest economy, China.

On the HCM Stock Exchange, the VN-Index gained another nine points, or 1.64 per cent, to close the morning at 554.82 points.

After a three-day rally, the index regained the loss it suffered on "Black Monday".

Oil and gas companies continued to lead the market. PV Gas (GAS) again hit the daily growth limit of seven per cent on the exchange, while PetroVietnam Drilling and Wells Service (PVD) also rose by more than four per cent.

Banks also performed well, as six of the nine listed codes gained value, while the rest closed unchanged.

Liquidity increased over yesterday morning's level, with more than 78 million shares, worth nearly VND1.2 trillion (US$53.3 million), being traded by the end of the morning.

On the Ha Noi Stock Exchange, the HNX-Index also advanced 0.61 per cent to end at 76.93 points, with a market turnover of VND300 billion ($13.3 million).

The afternoon session will start at 1pm.
