Vientiane authorities have granted approval for a Chinese company to conduct a feasibility study on the development of Nongbuamai marsh.

The planned development will see the construction of hotels, a shopping centre, hospital, school, public park, and some office buildings.

A memorandum of understanding (MoU) om the project was signed last week in Vientiane between Vientiane Planning and Investment Department Director Mr Phoukhong Bunnavong and Mekong Agriculture Co Ltd.'s Director Mr Liu Wei.

Sisattanak district Governor Mr Phokham Sayasone and the company's Deputy Director Mr Xusihui signed as witnesses to the document.

The marsh is located in Chomphet-Tai and Chomphet-Neua villages in Sisattanak district and Hadxaikhao village in Hadxaifong district on an area of some 34 hectares.

After signing the MoU, the company will begin to survey the area and assess the feas ibility of the development of Nongbuamai marsh.

In addition, the company will assess the social and environment impacts of the project and the provision of support to people living on the project site and nearby areas.

They will then draw up plans and undertake an economic feasibility study and tentative social and environment impact assessment to be handed over to the authorities.

According to the MoU, the company will take about six months to survey and collect infor mation in relation to the project and can extend the study in accordance with the set conditions.
