Agreements to boost Vientiane trading businesses

Vientiane anticipates increasing the rate of steady growth in socio-economic development over the years to come by making it easier for tradin g businesses to conform to regulations and by improving trade policies.

To this end, the Vientiane Industry and Commerce Department has been working hard to spread the message put out by the trading businesses in Vientiane with the aim of promoting more trade and investment in the capital.

The dissemination meeting covering these trade agreements and policies comes under the responsibility of the Ministry of Industry and Commerce and was co-chaired by Vice Mayor of Vientiane Dr Anouphab Tounalom, who is in charge of ma croeconomic affairs.

Speaking at the meeting, Dr Anouphab said the regulations, laws on trade and trade policies already exist but the business sectors will have to strictly implement them to ensure the effective and positive results of their operations.

“This is a platform for all wholesale and retail businesses in Vientiane. They can now exchange their experiences in doing business as well as the difficulties they have faced,” he said.

According to a report from the Vientiane Industry and Commerce Department, Vientiane alone has more than 15,000 such trading businesses.

Around 1,000 of them have registered their operations with the Vientiane Industry and Commerce Department, with the balance of more than 14,000 being managed by district authorities.

A total of nine shopping malls are currently operating in Vientiane, and their shops and other trading businesses are included in the total.

The promotion of the trading business in Vientiane is one of the essential aims of the Vientiane authorities, to increase the number of such businesses as well as to promote business connectivity ahead of the onset of the Asean Economic Community.

Local wholesale and retail traders, representatives of shopping malls and markets were invited to the meeting.

The Vientiane Industry and Commerce Department Director General Mr Berlin Phetchantharath and Domestic Trade Department Acting Director General Mr Bounthien Keosipha and o ther trade officials were also present at the meeting.
