Laos promotes unique food and culture at Milano Expo 2015
Laos' participation in the Expo Milano 2015 is intended to promote and share the best of Lao food with the world.
World Expo Milano was opened on May 1 in Milan, Italy and will run until October 31, 2015, under the theme ‘Feeding the Planet, Energy for Life'.
According to the expo organiser, over this six-month period Milan will become a global showcase where more than 140 participating countries will show the best of their technology offering concrete answers to a vital need: being able to guarantee healthy, safe and sufficient food for everyone, while respecting the planet and its equilibrium.
In addition to the exhibiting nations, the Expo also involves international organisations, and expects to welcome over 20 million visitors to its 1.1 million square metres of exhibition area.
A platform for the exchange of ideas and shared solutions on the theme of food, stimulating each country's creativity and promoting innovation for a sustainable future, Expo 2015 will give everyone the opportunity to find out about, and taste, the world's best dishes, while discovering the best of the agri-food and gastronomic traditions of each of the exhibitor countries.
It is a good opportunity for Laos as the government is currently conducting activities to achieve the millennium development goals and reduce the poverty of people.
Therefore, the development of various products is a vital policy of the government in achieving these goals especially the methods to promote and develop sufficient quality, sustainable and safe foods, the Ministry of Industry and Commerce's Trade and Product Promotion Department Acting Director General, Mr Phan Vilaysom, said yesterday at a press conference.
Laos intends to show and share its unique culture, abundance and variety of agricultural products to the world through advertising on tools, methods and information inside the Lao pavilion especially through exhibiting Sa La Pha Khao and demonstrating how sticky rice is produced and consumed, the tools of rice production, handicrafts relating to Lao culture along with Lao food, coffee, and beer.
Laos chose June 20 to be Laos Day at the expo in order to disseminate and promote Lao unique culture to expo visitors.
The event was well received with a good response and interest from the Italian media, local and foreign visitors, he said.
Mr Phan hoped that in the near future there will be more tourists and investors from Italy, Europe and other countries coming to Laos causing economic, trade, investment and tourism in Laos to grow, generating income and reducing the poverty of people.
To achieve these goals the government and private sector should continue to develop, advertise and create confidence in Lao products within the country and abroad.
They should pay attention to studies and research development methods from other countries suitable for use in Laos and together develop products to be varied, good quality, sufficient and safe, he added.
