E lectricite du Laos (EDL) is working on the extension of a memorandum of understanding (MOU) on the Nam Kong 1 hydropower project for a major foreign energy developer, China International Water & Electric Corporation (CWE).
EDL’s Deputy Managing Director, Mr Komonchanh Phet-asa, said on Monday that CWE has not yet completed the feasibility study into the Nam Kong 1 hydropower project in Xekong province, after it signed the MOU with EDL two years ago.
Based on the MOU, the study was expected to be completed within 18 months from the signing of the MOU.
Another EDL official said yesterday the CWE proposed the issue to EDL seeking an extension on the timeframe for the study recently but stressed that EDL has yet to give approval for the extended deadline.
“We will seek to find out how much longer CWE needs, depending on the work,” she said, adding that “From our experience, we have given extensions for other projects for a duration of about six months each time.”
CWE started conducting a feasibility study into the Nam Kong 1 hydropower project in Xekong following the signing of the MOU with EDL in August 2013, after receiving approval from the government.
