Unitel launches 4G service

Star Telecom Company Ltd known as Unitel officially launched its 4G services yesterday in Vientiane to provide customers in four provinces with higher speed internet at a reasonable cost.

4G is short for the fourth generation of mobile telecommunications technology which is five times faster than the old 3G, allowing faster downloading and uploading of information to the internet.

“Today we officially launch the 4G service that is contributing to the development goals of telecommunications service by the company and is bringing the latest telecommunications technology to our customers in Vientiane, Champassak, Savannakhet and Lu ang Prabang provinces”, Deputy Director of Star Telecom Company Ltd, Mr Kongphet Yongvongsitthi said.

Mr Kongphet said that the global telecommunications industry was changing quickly and Unitel wanted to offer the latest technology to its customers in Laos and keep abreast of the trend in moving from voice communication to more data communication.

Mr Kongphet said that Unitel invested many years of development and new equipment and technology system installation before being able to offer 4G services in the four provinces, and was planning to spread the service to the other provinces as soon as possible.

The official launch ceremony was held at the Lao Plaza hotel in Vientiane attended by Deputy Minister of Posts and Telecommunications, Mr Thansamay Kommasith and the Vietnamese Ambassador, Mr Nguyen Manh Hun along with guests from related sectors.

The initial 4G programme in Laos from Unitel will provide six alternatives for prepaid and postpaid mobile services, and four packages for a router wifi with daily, weekly and monthly duration.

Star Telecom is a joint venture between Viettel Global Joint Stock Company (Viettel Global) and Lao Asia Telecom (LAT), which operates mobile services, fixed phones, internet, leased lines and VAS.

Unitel claims to be one of the foremost telecommunication companies in Laos with most network coverage of 2G, 3G and the new 4G with 4,000 base stations covering 95 percent of the population and an underground fiber optic cable system with more than 20,000 km from the north to south of Laos.

Apart from the latest 4G service, Unitel also recently offered additional mobile phone services which it called mobile TV service enabling customers to watch live broadcasting of TV on mobile phones at a reasonable cost.

Unitel is the fourth company in Laos to offer 4G services, following Lao Telecom, Vimpelcom (Beeline) and Planet Online Laos.
