Samsung asks for separate terminal at Noi Bai Airport
With import and export volume expected to account for about 50% of the total cargo volume through Hanoi’s Noi Bai International Airport in the next few years, Samsung has proposed to have its own terminal at the airport.
Samsung has asked permission from the Civil Aviation Administration of Vietnam (CAAV) and the Airports Corporation of Vietnam (ACV) to use the ALS cargo terminal at the Noi Bai Airport for its export and import activities.
According to the group, the import and export of goods through the largest international airport in the North has exceeded 30% of the designed capacity.
Meanwhile, as the main exporter-importer that accounts for 35% of the cargo volume there (according to 2013 data), which is expected to increase to 50% in the next few years, Samsung wishes to have a private cargo terminal.
Samsung said that by the end of 2014, the new cargo terminal built by ALS at Noi Bai Airport will be operational. If this terminal is connected to Samsung’s warehouses in Yen Phong and Yen Binh Industrial Zones in Bac Ninh and Thai Nguyen provinces (also built by ALS), Samsung’s urgent needs for import-export activities will be satisfied.
Last year Samsung imported and exported about 80,000 tons of cargo, accounting for 35-40% of the total goods through the Noi Bai airport. The figure is estimated to reach about 130,000-150,000 tons in 2014 and it will grow about 20-30% per year over the next five years and will exceed 50% of the total imports and exports through Noi Bai airport in the near future.
Samsung began investing in Vietnam in 2008 with an initial capital of $670 million. After six years, its investment capital has increased by 10 times. The Korean investor has disbursed $1.7 billion out of the total registered capital of $2.5 billion in its factory in Yen Phong Industrial Zone (Bac Ninh). This plant contributed $23.9 billion to Vietnam’s export revenue in 2013.
In Yen Binh Industrial Park (Thai Nguyen), Samsung also built a smartphone factory with a $3 billion investment.
