Kheavaly Company to offer contract corn farming

Kheavaly Company plans to encourage farmers in Xayaboury and Vientiane provinces to plant corn, offering contract agreements to procure the corn from farmers at the minimum price of 1,100 kip per kg.

Kheavaly Agricultural Complex Import and Export Sole Co., Ltd signed a contract with National Agriculture and Forestry Institute (NAFRI) in Vientiane to use source seed variety LVN10-NAFRI for supply to the contracted farmers.

The contract was signed between Company President Ms Kheavaly Vongsouthi and NAFRI's Director General Dr Bounthong Bouahom.

According to the contract, NAFRI will supply 400 tonnes of corn seed (LVN10-NAFRI) to the Kheavaly Company, providing 200 tonnes twice a year before the planting season.

The agreement between NAFRI and the company will run for a five year period, with supply of the corn seed commencing in March next year.

Ms Kheavaly Vongsouthi said the LVN10-NAFRI variety is produced by NAFRI for supply to the company which will then in turn offer it for sale to farmers for planting on their lands.

This seed can be easily grown and also gains high yields, with 1kg of seed able to produce about 500kg of corn cobs.

More importantly, there is a high demand for corn on both the domestic and foreign markets, Ms Kheavaly said.

The company will begin selling corn seeds in early 2015, with most seeds to be provided to farmers in Vientiane and Xayaboury provinces and also some districts of Vientiane.

“We expect to procure corn around September of that year and then export to Malaysia and other neighbouring countries,” Ms Kheavaly said.

In addition, Kheavaly Company will collaborate with NAFRI to provide technical staff to monitor progress and give farmers advice in growing and looking after their corn properly.
