Northwest needs better connectivity

Provinces in northwestern Viet Nam faced shortcomings that could only be fixed by improving connectivity and transport infrastructure.

Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc said this yesterday in an attempt to get them to improve their co-ordination and tap into advantages held by each locality and the entire region.

Phuc, who is also the head of the Steering Committee for the Northwestern Region, made the request while chairing a teleconference yesterday to review the committee's performance in the first half of the year.

He also pointed to other shortcomings, including a lack of high-quality human resources, and a high rate of poor households.

Phuc requested provincial authorities to ensure local people did not suffer from hunger and disease.

He asked the committee to increase the number of Mong ethnic officials in communal political systems as requested by the Prime Minister in Decision 781/QD-TTg.

It was also asked to help ministries handle undocumented migration of ethnic people while speeding up the State management of religious affairs.

In the first six months of 2014, the northwestern region recorded an economic growth of 8.03 per cent. It collected VND8.95 trillion (US$420.65 million) for the State budget, up 14.8 per cent against the same period last year.

More than 40 big programmes and projects, including those on poverty reduction in ethnic areas, were implemented.
