Phoukhoun junction gets a makeover
The Dao Heuangsong Road-Bridge Construction Co., Ltd. expects to invest 15 billion kip to develop the Phoukhoun junction in Luang Prabang province after the provincial authorities approved a 30,000 square metre land concession.
The company plans to build markets, restaurants, guesthouses, parking areas and other facilities for travellers on Road No. 13 North.
A project agreement was signed recently by Luang Prabang province's Planning and Investment Department Director, Mr Bounlouan Singnakhone, and company President, Mr Khamouan Panyasane.
The signing ceremony was attended by Luang Prabang provincial Deputy Governor, Mr Bouakhong Nammavong, and officials from the relevant sectors.
Construction is already underway and officials believe that when the development is complete it will provide more accommodation for people who stop to shop and overnight in Phoukhoun district.
Traders in the area will also benefit as they will have better facilities, while local people also stand to boost their income, said Luang Prabang provincial investment section Deputy Head, Mr Anousack Phongphan.
The area is a prime development site as it is well positioned to provide services to people travelling by bus or private vehicle, both north- and southbound, he added.
The junction has long had a market, restaurants and guesthouses, but most are rather basic and poorly constructed, Mr Anousack said.
Phoukhoun district is about 130 kilometres south of the town of Luang Prabang, 130km from Xieng Khuang province and 260km north of Vientiane.
Land is currently being cleared for construction, with about 70 percent of the work already complete. The contractor will then build an embankment and install drainage and other infrastructure, taking into consideration the mountainous terrain.
According to the agreement, building construction will be completed and new facilities open for business in 2016, Mr Anousack said.
The land concession runs for 50 years, from March 2011 until March 2061.
