Spanish steakhouse opens doors

Vientiane's first open fire steakhouse officially opened on Monday night, serving up grilled meat and fish with a uniquely Spanish flair to delighted patrons.

Pimenton Restaurant Owner and Executive Chef, Mr Serge Selbr, said his team was experienced in operating restaurants in Europe, America and Thailand, and the open fire style of cooking was a personal favourite.

He said Vientiane has numerous Western restaurants, but it was rare to see one offering meat cooked on an open fire grill.

“The plates, bowls, water containers and other kitchen items are uniquely designed with a Lao style,” Mr Selbr said.

The restaurant's open fire style is in vogue internationally, but this is believed to be the first time Laos has had the experience.

Mr Selbr, who is of Lao-French heritage, gained a wide range of cooking skills at a hotel management university in Switzerland and has worked at a number of five-star hotels in Europe and America.

“My wife and I are quite experienced chefs because we have studied in school, so I hope we will pass on our knowledge and skills to our Lao workers, who come from all over the country,” Mr Selbr said.

“I'm not thinking of opening any branches because we want to focus on this restaurant, so we can serve good quality food to our clients.”

He said Laos is currently trying to develop cooking skills among hospitality workers to help them find work in the future.

The restaurateur spent less than US$100,000 to start up his new business, which currently has a 15 year lease.

Pimenton Restaurant is located near Mixay temple in Chanthabouly district, Vientiane.
