Workers learn investment promotion strategies

Better understanding of investment promotion strategies is needed by the Lao government to encourage more foreign investment in the country, according to a senior official.

Investment Promotion Department Acting Director General, Mr Achong Laomao, opened a five-day training course in Vientiane yesterday aimed at teaching the Ministry of Planning and Investment staff and their counterparts in Attapeu, Xayaboury and Luang Namtha provinces more about foreign investment.

Mr Achong said relevant officials at all levels should understand the strategies to promote direct investment, so their knowledge could be translated into actual investment in Laos.

“Workshop participants will get a basic knowledge about foreign direct investment and about investment attractions in Singapore, among other interesting issues,” he said.

Course participants will also learn how to deal with potential foreign investors, how to target investors, and look at current market trends.

The course, titled Understanding Investment Promotion Strategies, is jointly sponsored by the Singapore and Germany Third Country Training programme.

It is offered to Laos by the Embassy of the Republic of Singapore and the German Agency for International Development (GIZ).

At the end of the week, participants will be awarded certificates of completion by the Singaporean Ambassador to Laos, Ms Kang Siew Kheng.
