Mekong approves fisheries centre

The Mekong Delta city of Can Tho has approved a project to build a fisheries centre for the region, announced Director of the municipal Department of Agriculture and Rural Development Pham Van Quynh on Tuesday.

At a working session with the Republic of Korea's institute for applied agriculture, Quynh said that the project will cover an area of about 110ha in Hung Phu 1 industrial zone in Tan Phu ward, Cai Rang district of Can Tho with an investment of US$400 million.

The project will focus on human resources training, scientific research, aquatic technology transfer and trade promotion. It will also include a fishery entrepot for the Mekong Delta as well as domestic and overseas markets alongside with a regional fishery research institute, aqua-product processing complexes and a fresh water aqua-product trading floor.

When operational, the centre will facilitate the active and sustainable development of the Mekong Delta's fishery industry, boost regional economic development and bring into play the strengths of localities.
