US soy eyes bigger role in food, aquaculture supply chains

US soy is used directly in food products such as tofu, soy milk, soy skin and soy flour, while significant volumes are imported for use in feed for poultry, livestock and farmed seafood.

US soybean is seeking a greater role in Việt Nam's food and aquaculture supply chains amid growing demand for traceable and sustainably produced ingredients.

Trần Mỹ Hạnh, the US Soybean Export Council's (USSEC) representative in Việt Nam, said at the VIETFISH 2026 held in HCM City last week that from tofu, soy milk and soy skin to cooking oil and ingredients for processed foods and feed for livestock and aquaculture, US soy is used in a wide range of products in the market.

In addition, consumer demand is increasingly moving beyond taste and price, with greater attention being paid to the origin of ingredients, traceability, production practices and environmental impacts, making the use of tracable and sustainably sourced ingredients become critical.

US soybean is used directly in food products such as tofu, soy milk, soy skin and soy flour, while significant volumes are imported for use in feed for poultry, livestock and farmed seafood, Hạnh said.

For the aquaculture sector, USSEC highlighted that using US soybean in aquaculture feed is a way for Vietnamese seafood producers to meet requirements under international certification programmes, including Best Aquaculture Practices and the Aquaculture Stewardship Council, in the context that sustainability is becoming an increasingly important consideration alongside nutritional quality.

The use of traceable and sustainably sourced ingredients could help seafood producers respond to stricter market requirements, while improving the value and competitiveness of their products in international markets,  Hạnh said.

For US soy suppliers, as Việt Nam's seafood industry seeks to shift from growth based primarily on volume towards higher value, quality, technology and sustainability, the trend creates opportunities to expand beyond traditional applications and strengthen their position in Việt Nam's food, livestock and aquaculture supply chains, she said.
