GE Vernova Inc, a global energy company dedicated to purpose-driven solutions, has officially announced the commencement of commercial activities at PetroVietnam Power Corporation's (PV Power) Nhơn Trạch 3 and 4, a 1.6-gigawatt (GW) Power Plant located in Ông Kèo Industrial Park in Đại Phước Commune of the southern province of Đồng Nai.
The power plant of Nhơn Trạch 3 and 4, built by the engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) companies Samsung C&T and Lilama, marks the first HA-powered plant in Việt Nam, as well as the first to be powered by liquefied natural gas (LNG).
GE Vernova’s H-class leading technology fueled by highly efficient natural gas generates a lower environmental impact, with approximately 60 per cent less carbon emissions compared to thermal plants of the same electrical output powered by coal. In addition, this project can expedite the integration of renewable energy sources by improving the reliability and stability of the energy grid.
For this project, GE Vernova provided two blocks of more than 800 megawatts (MW) each, including a 9HA.02 gas turbine, the company’s most efficient 50 Hz gas turbine, an STF-D650 steam turbine, a W88 generator, which is a Once Through Heat Recovery Steam Generator – a key enabler in advanced water-steam cycles delivering higher combined cycle efficiency.
“Renewable energy is expected to grow significantly in Việt Nam while at the same time, lower-carbon and highly efficient gas power generation will play a crucial role in supporting this growth while ensuring grid stability and reliability,” said Ramesh Singaram, President & CEO of GE Vernova's Gas Power business in Asia Pacific region.
“This first project of its kind is expected to bring electricity for large industrial areas in the southern region, including HCM City and Đồng Nai Province, while opening up a new chapter for gas power generation in Việt Nam.”
As per the updated Power Development Plan 8, an adjustment to Việt Nam's National Power Development Plan VIII, LNG plays a pivotal role in the country's flexible energy mix, with a projected capacity of over 22 gigawatts (GW) by 2030, representing 9.5-12.3 per cent of the national grid.
The Nhơn Trạch 3 and 4 Power Plant is anticipated to play a vital role in meeting the escalating electricity demands in the southern region of Việt Nam and contribute to the nation's sustainability objectives. This initiative signifies a shift towards gas-fired power generation and facilitates the transition from coal to gas.
GE Vernova’s equipment provides up to 30 per cent of the Việt Nam’s electricity needs, with over 1,100 employees across 13 locations from various GE Vernova businesses throughout the country.
