Việt Nam’s beverage industry is under growing pressure to adapt as consumers demand greener products and a circular economy.

According to Nguyễn Văn Việt, President of the Vietnam Beer, Alcohol and Beverage Association (VBA), the sector contributes over VNĐ60 trillion (US$2.3 billion) to the State budget each year and supports millions of jobs across its value chain, from agriculture, production and logistics to retail.

“There is still significant room for growth and the beverage industry must address emerging consumer trends and sustainable development requirements," he said. "It must strengthen green transformation and renovate technology in a rapidly changing economy and consumer market.”

Chu Thị Vân Anh, VBA’s General Secretary, said the industry has vast potential, supported by a diverse supply chain, robust distribution network, abundant raw materials, a dynamic and open market and rising incomes.

“The market is shifting as consumers increasingly favour healthier, reasonably priced beverages. Producers are focusing more on sustainability, energy efficiency, environmental protection, renewable energy, eco-friendly packaging and natural ingredients,” she said.

She stressed the importance of adopting modern technology in production to boost competitiveness and respond to market trends, noting the sector is entering a transformative phase with rising demands for safety, health and sustainability.

Nguyễn Đình Thọ, Deputy Director of the Institute of Policy and Strategy for Agriculture and Environment under the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment, said green transformation and circular economy development will be the priorities for Việt Nam’s beverage industry in the next phase.

He added that the sector is crucial for helping Việt Nam achieve net-zero emissions and move towards a sustainable production model, urging investment in energy-efficient technology, renewable energy, emissions management and environmentally friendly packaging.

“Green transformation also offers an opportunity to enhance competitiveness, attract investment and meet sustainable consumption trends,” Thọ said.

He highlighted the need for an improved legal framework and recycling infrastructure to enable the beverage industry to become a pioneer in the national green economy.
