Svay Rieng plans strategic land management to drive development
Svay Rieng is home to 13 special economic zones, with 12 already in operation. Together, they host 1,063 factories and enterprises, generating employment for more than 142,000 people.
The Royal Government has set its sights on transforming Svay Rieng province into a major economic hub in Cambodia’s southeast, with a new plan to align land management and urban planning with regional economic corridors.
Peng Pursa, Governor of Svay Rieng, and Duch Wontito, Undersecretary of State at the Ministry of Land Management, Urban Planning and Construction, on Wednesday presided over a high-level consultation meeting on the “Plan for Orienting Land Management and Urban Planning to Link the Economic Corridors of Svay Rieng province” at the provincial hall.
The meeting brought together senior representatives from the ministry, deputy provincial governors, city and district chiefs, heads of departments and offices, as well as other relevant officials.
The discussion focused on how to integrate land use and urban development with the province’s growing role in industrial production, agriculture, and tourism, while positioning Svay Rieng as a strategic gateway for exports and imports.
Governor Peng Pursa stressed the significance of the initiative, describing it as a roadmap to seize opportunities created by the Royal Government’s national development agenda, economic growth, and the province’s untapped potential.
“The Plan for Orienting Land Management and Urban Planning to Link the Economic Corridors is very important. It is designed to promote Svay Rieng as a province with strong potential in industry, agriculture, tourism, and trade, transforming it into a vital corridor in the southeast region,” he said.
“It is not only timely but also necessary. It will guide land management and urbanisation in a way that addresses current needs, provides a clear strategic direction, and ensures long-term socio-economic sustainability,” he added.
Currently, Svay Rieng is home to 13 special economic zones, with 12 already in operation. Together, they host 1,063 factories and enterprises, generating employment for more than 142,000 people.
Svay Rieng province, bordering Vietnam, is increasingly positioning itself as a strategic gateway for international trade and investment, Lor Vichet, Vice President of the Cambodia Chinese Commerce Association (CCCA), told Khmer Times.
He said, “What attracts numerous economic zones to Svay Rieng is not just its role as an international gateway, but also the province’s well-developed infrastructure for the efficient movement of goods.”
