Vice Chairman of the HCM City People’s Committee Bùi Xuân Cường applauded Mastercard’s key role in driving the city’s digital transformation during a meeting with the company’s delegation on September 9.

Mastercard’s innovative solutions have been crucial in modernising transport infrastructure and boosting financial inclusion, aligning closely with Việt Nam’s wider digital economy ambitions. Cường highlighted the city's priority on adopting cashless payments across metro and bus networks, with plans for further expansion.

He said Mastercard’s pioneering efforts have helped shape a seamless, convenient and efficient transit experience for residents and government alike.

“HCM City is prioritising the adoption of cashless payment solutions across the metro and bus networks, with plans for broader expansion in the future,” Cường said.

Mastercard’s Division President for Southeast Asia, Safdar Khan, noted the company’s nearly two decades of commitment to Việt Nam’s digital agenda, advancing contactless payments for transit and supporting financial inclusion so that 'every Vietnamese can participate in and benefit from the digital economy.'

This meeting marked a significant milestone in Mastercard’s partnership with Việt Nam, celebrating ongoing collaboration to deliver smarter, safer and more inclusive digital payment solutions.

HCM City stands among the first in Việt Nam to implement open-loop payment systems on multiple public transport modes including metro, bus and waterbus. These systems allow commuters to use credit and debit cards or mobile wallets to pay contactlessly for their journeys.

Over the past year, Mastercard partnered with the HCM City Urban Railway Company Limited No. 1 (HURC1) to introduce contactless payments on Metro Line No. 1 (Bến Thành – Suối Tiên route) in December 2024, later expanding the system to the bus network in April 2025.

These initiatives have made daily commutes more convenient, secure and inclusive for millions of users, accelerating digital payment adoption across HCM City and supporting its vision to become a leading smart cashless urban hub.
