Viettel has officially broken ground on two monumental projects – a high-tech R&D hub and a data powerhouse – signalling the company is truly raising the stakes on both defence and digital transformation.
The Military Industry and Telecoms Group (Viettel) has begun work on two strategic ventures: the An Khánh Data Centre and the Viettel Research and Development (R&D) Centre, with combined investment exceeding VNĐ25 trillion (US$1 billion).
Unveiled as part of a nationwide commemoration programme for the 80th anniversary of the August Revolution and National Day on September 2, these projects form part of a broader launch of 250 initiatives across 34 provinces, collectively valued at VNĐ1.28 quadrillion.
According to Viettel, both facilities are catalysts for modernising national defence and accelerating digitalisation, perfectly aligned with the Politburo’s Resolution 57‑NQ/TW on establishing key national research centres focusing on strategic technologies.
The Viettel R&D Centre, sited over 13 hectares in Hòa Lạc Hi‑Tech Park, has a VNĐ10 trillion budget and comprises six smart buildings set for completion by 2030. Designed as a leading-edge research complex, it will oversee a full development cycle – from research and design to prototyping and production – for advanced 'Made in Việt Nam' technologies.
Projects span from cruise engines, unmanned aerial vehicles, remote sensing satellites, and radar systems, to civilian domains like big data, artificial intelligence (AI), and cloud computing.
Built to international standards, the centre will be smart, green, and highly secure, with plans to employ approximately 2,500 highly skilled professionals in support of national defence and innovation objectives.
Meanwhile, the An Khánh Data Centre is planned on a 1.9-hectare site, with an investment of VNĐ17.5 trillion. With a design capacity of 60 MW, it is poised to become the largest data centre in northern Việt Nam.
Phase one is expected to be operational by the second quarter of 2026, with the facility evolving into a hyperscale data centre – the second of its kind for Viettel – by 2030.
It is being built to Uptime Tier III standards and will feature Viettel-developed AI systems, a five-layer security network, and advanced cooling technology. —
