Toshin Development breaks ground on Westlake Square Hanoi

Toshin Development has broken ground on Westlake Square Hanoi, a landmark mixed-use complex in the Starlake urban area that aims to set a new benchmark for high-end retail and lifestyle spaces in the capital.

At the August 2 ceremony, the real estate arm of Japan’s Takashimaya Group announced the project as a key step in its long-term expansion in Hanoi, with Westlake Square featuring high-end retail and office spaces aimed at elevating the city’s commercial landscape.

Westlake Square Hanoi aims to become a new retail landmark in the capital, blending international-standard shopping, office, and leisure spaces. It will help shape a high-end urban ecosystem and establish a vibrant destination in West Hanoi.

The development will also introduce the first Takashimaya Department Store in Hanoi – bringing one of Japan’s most prestigious retail names to the city. This move creates opportunities for global brands to enter the western market and reinforces Takashimaya’s role in redefining the retail landscape in Vietnam.

With systematic planning and premium positioning, the project is anticipated to become a prime destination for the modern consumer class.

Westlake Square Hanoi is being developed by Toshin Development with a focus on enhancing user experiences, reflected in its luxurious design, systematic services, and optimised movement within the retail space.

The Japanese ‘Omotenashi’ philosophy of exceptional hospitality will be integrated throughout operations, creating a destination that combines commerce with cultural exchange and modern lifestyles for Hanoi residents.

The development also stands as a testament to Toshin's long-term commitment to enduring value, sustainable operations, and alignment with Hanoi’s dynamic growth.

With an environmentally friendly development approach, Westlake Square adheres to stringent international green building standards from the outset, targeting LEED Platinum certification - the highest level in the US Green Building Council rating system. This reflects a technical choice and a responsible development philosophy that balances architecture, community, and the environment.

Speaking at the event, Shinsuke Kuramoto, president and representative director of Toshin Development, said, "Westlake Square Hanoi is a flagship undertaking of the Takashimaya Group in Hanoi. We are mobilising all available resources to realise the vision of delivering a top-quality commercial centre within the next two years."

"Toshin Development does more than construct buildings, we strive to create emotional landmarks that hold memories and connect communities. This embodies our core philosophy ‘Make the Mind Symbol’ a principle that continues to guide our development approach. This project is a clear testament to that commitment," added Kuramoto.

Matthew Powell, director of Savills Hanoi, said, "The entry of renowned international brands such as Takashimaya demonstrates growing confidence in Hanoi’s long-term retail prospects. The Starlake area is quickly establishing itself as a key destination for global retailers, with new developments like Westlake Square Hanoi contributing to a high-quality commercial ecosystem that reflects the city’s evolving consumer expectations."

With a total gross floor area of approximately 43,000 square metres in its first phase, Westlake Square Hanoi will comprise a retail podium from basement level B1 to the 6th floor and premium office spaces from the 7th to the 10th floor.

Developed as a multifunctional complex, Westlake Square is designed to flexibly meet the needs of international retailers and businesses seeking high-quality office space in West Hanoi.

Beyond its advantages in planning and location, Westlake Square Hanoi stands out with its modern architectural design, comprehensive amenities, and commitment to international operational standards.

It is also the first commercial venture in Hanoi to be fully developed by Toshin Development – from master planning and design to operational management – ensuring consistency in quality and experience for both tenants and consumers.

Upon completion, Westlake Square Hanoi is expected to add a high-quality retail supply to the market while elevating the image of the Tay Ho Tay area, emerging as a new shopping, working, and experiential hub for the capital.
