Kim Long Motor, LG Energy Solution ink battery production deal

Local carmaker Kim Long Motor Huế Company has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with LG Energy Solution, a world leading lithium-ion battery manufacturer, to supply Niken-Mangan-Coban (NCM) battery in Việt Nam and the region.

The two partners agreed to develop the first manufacturing and assembling complex on the advanced technology battery in Việt Nam with automation rate up to 90 per cent.

The battery manufacture complex will be built on a 9ha-site in the Kim Long Motor Huế Industrial Park with an investment of VNĐ1.2 trillion (US$48 million).

Local carmaker will be responsible for producing, assembling, and packaging completed NCM battery sets from cells provided by LG Energy Solution.

Hồ Công Hải, general director of Kim Long Motor company said the partnership with LG Energy Solution would help the local automaker secure a stable supply chain, optimise costs, and maintain strict control over product quality.

“We plan to increase localisation rate of the battery production line to 80 per cent in the second quarter of 2026. The launch of a domestically produced battery factory will not only accelerate the development of battery-powered vehicle manufacturing in Việt Nam, but also reinforce the country’s position on the global and regional map of renewable energy industries in the future.”

Earlier this year, Kim Long Motor inked an agreement with a Korean partner to export the first made-in-Việt Nam electric EV buses which will be used for tours and school services.

The Kim Long Motor has invested VNĐ25 trillion to build the first automobile industrial complex including production centre, engine, spare parts and accessories in Huế City.

The complex, which was designed with a capacity of 6,800 cars per year in the first phase of investment, had produced 2,100 cars in the first half 2025.

It rolled out the first minibus and van products, the Kim Long X9 series, in 2024.
