Towards a Norway-Vietnam strategic green partnership

A high-level technical seminar to support Vietnam’s energy transition was held on May 28 with the support of the Norwegian Embassy in Hanoi.

The event was organised by the Electricity Authority of the Ministry of Industry and Trade of Vietnam (MoIT), attracting the participation of domestic and international experts, including those from DNV, a global assurance and risk management company headquartered in Norway, Vietnam Electricity (EVN), Petrovietnam, PVGas, PetroVietnam Technical Services Corporation (PTSC), and representatives of international partners and the private sector.

Addressing the event, Norwegian Ambassador Hilde Solbakken said, "We welcome this great initiative by the MoIT Electricity Authority. This reaffirms Norway’s commitment to support Vietnam's green energy transition. From Norway’s experience, this process requires the participation of all relevant stakeholders, including the private sector. I hope that the global expertise in energy systems and risk management that DNV brings will be helpful for Vietnam on its path towards a sustainable, resilient, and low-carbon energy future.”

With the aim of providing a strategic platform for advancing Vietnam’s clean energy transition, the seminar brought together a diverse group of stakeholders to exchange insights on the latest developments in clean energy technologies and transition strategies.

The event also looked at aligning perspectives and priorities, while collectively shaping a cohesive and forward-looking roadmap for Vietnam’s energy future. The seminar provided a valuable opportunity to establish partnerships between domestic and international players, fostering collaboration that can accelerate progress and unlock new opportunities in the energy sector.

Specifically, technical presentations from DNV experts provided insights into the latest advances in critical technologies such as offshore wind, hydrogen, carbon capture, energy storage, and digital risk management. The aim was to reinforce Vietnam’s national commitment to achieving net-zero emissions by 2050, aligning with global climate goals and signalling a clear direction for policy, investment, and innovation.

Hagsung Kim, vice president of global business development at DNV Digital Solutions, said that Vietnam’s power-development agenda and rapid energy transition offer tremendous scope for innovation.

“By combining our deep domain expertise with cutting-edge digital solutions, DNV collaborates with industry to transform the complex engineering data into clear, risk-informed decisions faster and more effectively. Through open knowledge-sharing and close collaboration, we remain committed to supporting Vietnam’s expanding role of power development and energy transition while reinforcing our long-term partnership with the country’s energy sector,”Hagsung Kim noted.

According to Chan Hoai Trang, deputy director general of the Electricity Department, Vietnam is starting the initial phase of energy transition, which is important to set the tone for the country’s adaptive changes in the context of rapid developments of the global energy sector.

“Despite challenges, including energy security, a shortage of domestic supplies, and increased pressure from imports, Vietnam has made significant progress in establishing a stable and forward-looking foundation for the country’s green and sustainable economic growth,” he said.

Brice Le Gallo, vice president and regional director for Asia-Pacific at DNV Energy Systems, shared that in collaboration with its key stakeholders, DNV is honoured to support Vietnam’s energy transition through the exchange of insights on the latest developments in clean energy and decarbonisation technologies, and effective transition strategies.

“Vietnam’s commendable renewable energy ambitions are shaping its future as a green energy hub in Southeast Asia, and at DNV, we remain dedicated to supporting this important transformation. As a trusted partner, we will leverage our expertise in decarbonisation and renewable energy and foster strategic partnerships that empower industries, enhance infrastructure, and drive long-term success in Vietnam’s green energy future together," he added.
