Deputy Prime Minister Bùi Thanh Sơn has signed a decision to approve the development strategy for the Việt Nam National Coal and Mineral Industries Group (Vinacomin) until 2030 and 2045.

According to Decision 625, the overall goal is to develop Vinacomin into a strong economic group that plays a crucial role in growing the State economy, while maintaining its key position as one of the three pillars of energy production with sustainable plans, which is in line with Việt Nam's commitment to achieving carbon neutrality by 2050.

The group must apply advanced technology and seek suitable research partners to explore the Red River Delta Coal Basin, which covers an area of over 3,500sq.km from Việt Trì District (Phú Thọ Province) to Tiền Hải District (Thái Bình Province), according to the strategy.

It is 3,500 metres deep and is estimated to have a reserve of approximately 210 billion tonnes of coal.

The Government also directs Vinacomin to lead the development of the mining and metallurgical industry.

The group must lead the exploration and exploitation of bauxite and develop alumina and aluminium production in the Central Highlands, which will drive the development of Việt Nam's aluminium industry and grow the local economies.

Specifically, it needs to invest resources into expanding the capacity of the Tân Rai and Nhân Cơ alumina complexes to about two million tonnes per year, each.

It is allowed to build the Đắk Nông 2 bauxite-alumina-aluminium complex, with an alumni-aluminium capacity of two million tonnes and 0.5 million tonnes per year, respectively.

It can also build a new aluminium electrolytic plant in Lâm Đồng Province with an annual capacity of 0.5 million tonnes.

Among these goals, the Đắk Nông 2 aluminium electrolytic plant must have been built by 2030 to establish Đắk Nông Province as a national aluminium industrial centre.

Vinacomin is also tasked with researching the development of mining and processing complexes for minerals in provinces such as Hà Tĩnh (steel), Tây Nguyên (bauxite), Bình Thuận (titanium), Lai Châu (rare earths), Thanh Hóa (chromium), and Lào Cai (copper).
