The foreign-invested Phú Mỹ 2.2 Power Plant was transferred to the State-owned Vietnam Electricity Corporation (EVN) on Tuesday after 20 years of operating under the build-transfer-operate (BOT) mechanism.

The signing ceremony of the handover agreement was held in Hà Nội among representatives from the Ministry of Industry and Trade, the plant operator Mekong Energy Company Limited, and EVN.

The power plant is based in the southern province of Bà Rịa-Vũng Tàu and started operating on Feburary 4, 2005.

It is the first power project fully invested by foreign companies, in which the investors were chosen by the Vietnamese Government through international competitive bidding.

It is a combined cycle gas turbine power plant with a total capacity of 715 megawatts (MW), financed by EDF International (France), Sumitomo Corporation (Japan) and JERA Co Inc (Japan).

As the operating period by foreign investors has ended, according to the BOT contract, the plant is now under the management of EVN.

It is expected to contribute about 4.6 billion kWh of electricity per year to the national power system.
