Tourism key driver for socio-economic growth

The year 2024 marked a pivotal moment for Cambodia’s tourism industry. With a focus on sustainability, government support, and an emphasis on improving the visitor experience, Cambodia has firmly positioned itself as a competitive tourism destination in Southeast Asia.

The sector is poised for continued growth in the coming years, with major infrastructure projects, a diverse range of tourist offerings, and an ever-growing emphasis on preserving the country’s rich cultural and natural heritage.

As one of the four pillars supporting the Cambodian economy, tourism plays a key role in creating jobs, boosting the gross domestic product (GDP), and promoting cultural exchange.

Tourism has long been a cornerstone of Cambodia’s economy. With its rich cultural heritage, historical landmarks, and natural beauty, the tourism sector has become a major driver of growth.

In 2024, Cambodia made significant strides towards promoting sustainable tourism. Emphasising eco-friendly options, the government focused on preserving natural wonders like the national parks, beaches, and cultural landmarks such as Angkor Wat. This shift was intended to attract eco-conscious travellers while ensuring the long-term protection of Cambodia’s tourism assets.

The reopening of borders after the easing of travel restrictions played a key role in the sector’s resurgence. With international travel back in full swing, Cambodia saw a significant influx of international tourists, marking a crucial step in the sector’s recovery and growth. Prime Minister Hun Manet highlighted the importance of tourism beyond its economic contributions, stressing its role in fostering peace and unity among nations.

In the message to mark World Tourism Day, Prime Minister Hun Manet acknowledged the importance of diversifying and innovating within the tourism sector to ensure its competitiveness in the global marketplace.

The Royal Government has embarked on several ambitious infrastructure projects. On August 5, 2024, the government launched the construction of the Funan Techo Canal, marking a significant milestone for the tourism industry. The canal is expected to open up new opportunities for multi-tourism destinations along its course.

In addition, Cambodia has made substantial upgrades to its transportation infrastructure. The new 4E-scale Siem Reap International Airport, an expanded Sihanoukville International Airport, and the soon-to-be-completed 4F-scale Techo International Airport in Takhmao town are set to further enhance Cambodia’s appeal as a global tourism hub. The Techo International Airport is scheduled to open in the first half of 2025 and is expected to accommodate all types of aircraft, solidifying Cambodia’s status as a regional leader in aviation.

Minister of Tourism Huot Hak stated recently that tourism is a priority for the government, noting that it has been considered ‘green gold’ for its role in driving socio-economic development while preserving the country’s rich cultural and natural heritage. Key campaigns such as the ‘Visit Siem Reap Year 2024,’ the ‘Year of People-to-People Exchange’ between Cambodia and China, and the ‘Cambodia-India Tourism Year’ have helped boost the sector. These initiatives are part of a broader strategy to help Cambodia achieve its goal of becoming an upper-middle-income country by 2030 and a high-income country by 2050. The tourism sector’s growth will be a critical factor in realising this vision. By focusing on diversification, creativity, and innovation, Cambodia is working to ensure that its tourism offerings remain competitive on the global stage.

Hak also highlighted the role of political stability, security, and peace in contributing to the success of Cambodia’s tourism sector.

According to the Ministry of Tourism, Cambodia welcomed approximately 6 million international tourists in the first 11 months of 2024, marking a 22 percent increase over the previous year.

Domestic tourism also saw impressive growth, with about 20 million national tourists travelling across the country, a 19.7 percent increase from 2023. By the end of 2024, Cambodia expects to welcome around 6.7 million international tourists, surpassing pre-pandemic levels and around 22 million domestic tourists.

Cambodia’s cultural, historical, and natural assets continue to be the driving force behind its tourism success.

Events and festivals played a significant role in boosting Cambodia’s tourism appeal. Major cultural celebrations, such as the Cambodian New Year and Water Festival, attract tourists from around the world while also contributing to the country’s image as a vibrant destination for cultural tourism.

“The Ministry of Tourism has also initiated the promotion and development of Cambodian tourism under the slogan ‘Everyone is a Cambodian tourism promoter’ and continues to actively participate in promoting the Tourism for All campaign, together for more extensive tourism,” Hak emphasised.

The private sector has played an essential role in the growth of Cambodia’s tourism industry. Chhay Sivlin, President of the Cambodia Association of Travel Agents (CATA), told Khmer Times that in 2024, Cambodia’s tourism sector has grown significantly, attracting new tourists and investments.

She said that offering new services and experiences allowed tourists from other countries to have a great experience. Promotion of tourist destinations and government support have also helped increase attractiveness.

“The Prime Minister has paid close attention to the tourism sector. He has conducted unannounced inspections of tourist resorts and issued new policies to support the private sector, including tax exemption measures for operators in Siem Reap Province and a $50 million loan measure have gone a long way in encouraging the sector,” she said.

“The government’s policy aims to increase investment and provide opportunities for businesses in the tourism sector. This action demonstrates his commitment and attention to the development of this sector and his ongoing efforts to find innovative ways to help Cambodia grow,” Sivlin stressed.
