Cambodian pepper looks for market in Malaysia
The Cambodia Pepper and Spices Federation (CPSF) has sought ways to promote Cambodia’s peppercorn in the Malaysian market, stressing that this ASEAN nation has potential for organic pepper.
CPSF joined the Malaysia Industry Conference 2024 from May 14 to 15, showcasing the immense potential of the pepper industry of Cambodia to Malaysian buyers and other foreign participants.
The prestigious event provided an exceptional platform for CPSF to showcase its expertise in international pepper sector cooperation. By participating in the conference, CPSF had a remarkable opportunity to not only promote Cambodia pepper but also establish itself as an active and valuable partner to the Malaysia Pepper Board and potential importers from around the world, said its Executive Director Van Vannal.
The Malaysia Industry Conference served as a platform for CPSF to engage with industry leaders, experts, and potential importers, creating an avenue for fruitful discussions and networking opportunities. It provided a platform for CPSF to showcase the high quality and authenticity of Cambodia pepper both GI and organic, positioning it as a commodity in the global market, he said.
“The CPSF showcased the potential and opportunities for international pepper sector cooperation. It not only raised awareness about Cambodia pepper and CPSF but also served as a catalyst for establishing new partnerships and collaborations with the Malaysia Pepper Board and potential importers,” Vannal told Khmer Times.
Additionally, CPSF also wished to promote the commodity to other international companies investing in Malaysia to better understand Cambodian pepper products.
The proposal to expand the market for Cambodian pepper to Malaysia follows the opening of new markets in China and other countries such as those in the Middle East and the US.
Pepper is grown on 6,935 hectares in Cambodia, according to the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries report.
Cambodia exports both Geographical Indication (GI) pepper from Kampot and non-GI pepper, including mixed pepper, good-practice-agriculture pepper and organic pepper. GI pepper is mostly exported to the EU.
According to CPSF, the current price of pepper is between $3,000-$3,500 per tonne.
In 2023, Cambodia exported 6,153 tonnes of dried pepper to international markets, a decrease of 26.76 percent compared to the previous year.
