US provides anti-timber trafficking training in Vietnam

Attorneys from the Environment and Natural Resources Division of the U.S. Department of Justice, in cooperation with the Vietnamese Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development and the Vietnamese Forest Protection Department, kicked off a training workshop in Hanoi on Monday for local officials on countering illegal timber trafficking.

The workshop is scheduled to last until Thursday as the first in a series of workshops and discussions under the U.S.-Vietnam agreement on law enforcement capacity-building collaboration, the U.S. Embassy in Vietnam said in an announcement.

With the aim of fostering a more collaborative approach to combatting the illegal timber trade between the two countries, the technical assistance workshop involves Vietnam’s forestry, industry, and non-governmental stakeholders.

In addition to the Justice Department, the event is attended by participants from the U.S. Departments of Agriculture, the Interior, and Homeland Security, U.S. trade representatives, and the U.S. Embassy in Vietnam.

Monday’s announcement highlighted the significant emphasis placed by leaders of both countries on intensifying law enforcement and security cooperation within the framework of the U.S.-Vietnam Comprehensive Strategic Partnership.
