Vietnam’s Norwegian seafood purchase accounted for 10 percent of the European nation’s total fishery exports during this period, heard an event within the framework of the eighth VietFood, Beverage and Professional Packing Machines (VietFood & Beverage – ProPack Vietnam 2023), which opened in Hanoi on Wednesday.
In September alone, Vietnam spent nearly $23.7 million buying 9,000 metric tons of fishery products, including salmon, king crabs, and codfish, from Norway, Southeast Asia regional director of the Norwegian Seafood Council Asbjørn Warvik Rørtveit told the event.
“Vietnamese consumers’ demand for Norwegian seafood is on the rise, so the Southeast Asian nation becomes attractive to Norwegian fishery exporters,” said Rørtveit.
He added that Norway’s focus on sustainable fishery development is aimed at providing consumers with quality seafood and protecting marine ecosystems.
Statistics from the General Department of Vietnam Customs indicated that Vietnam shipped fishery products worth only $4.8 million to Norway during the January-September period.
In 2022, Vietnam’s seafood exports to Norway reached some $10 million, while the former imported $260 million worth of fisheries from the latter.
Speaking at a Norway-Vietnam workshop co-held by the Norwegian Embassy in Vietnam and the Vietnamese Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development early in 2023, a representative of the Vietnam Association of Seafood Exporters and Producers (VASEP) proposed the Norwegian side open a wider door for Vietnamese seafood.
The VASEP representative also voiced the expectation that Norway would help Vietnam upgrade its aquaculture technologies and techniques.
