Vietnam int'l fishery expo attracts thousands of visitors from across Asia

Thousands of visitors, including hundreds of Chinese, South Koreans, Indians, and Japanese, gathered at the Vietnam Fisheries International Exhibition (Vietfish 2023) in Ho Chi Minh City on Wednesday.

The expo, which kicked off on Wednesday and will take place until Friday at the Saigon Exhibition and Convention Center (SECC) in District 7, features more than 420 booths run by 220 businesses from Vietnam and 14 other countries and territories, including China, South Korea, Thailand, India, and Singapore.

A wide selection of products are being showcased at the event, including fresh and frozen fishery items, dried and value-added items, and input materials in aquaculture.

During its opening day, the event saw a massive number of visitors, mainly representing enterprises in need of new suppliers and businesess looking to sell their products.

A representative of the Vietnam Association of Seafood Exporters and Producers (VASEP), the organizer of the expo, told Tuoi Tre (Youth) newspaper that Vietfish 2023 is a large-scale trade show of the local fishery industry.

The trade show, themed 'Asian Home of Seafood,' is expected to contribute to increasing Vietnam’s market share in the processed- and convenient-seafood product industry, said a VASEP representative.

Major cities have witnessed a big shift to consuming canned, processed, and frozen products, especially among young people. Hence, Vietfish 2023 will focus on this shift, according to the VASEP representative.

Businesses participating in the expo said the COVID-19 pandemic has significantly changed consumer habits, adding that an economic downturn has led to decreasing demand, thereby sharply reducing the export price of Vietnamese seafood.

Meanwhile, seafood consumption in Vietnam is on the rise, making the country a potential market for major seafood exporters such as Norway, Canada, and the U.S..

Since the end of last year, these countries have held several events to promote trade in Vietnam.

The three-day trade show also boasts some sideline activities such as conferences and symposia, features on the latest consumer trends, and innovative solutions to support businesses in the field.
