Port EDI still due for Aug 17 launch, ministry confirms
An electronic data interchange (EDI) system is still on track to be launched at the Kingdom’s ports on August 17, to effect a large-scale modernisation of entry-exit navigation control in Cambodia, switching from manual to online, the public works ministry confirmed on June 24.
Port EDI will enable the digital exchange of business documents and data in a standardised electronic format between trading partners, to optimise import-export operations at ports. Options to pay for public service fees will initially be available through Wing or ACLEDA Bank, although similar deals with other financial institutions are in the pipeline.
Speaking while chairing a meeting on June 24 to discuss the progress of Port EDI, Minister of Public Works and Transport Sun Chanthol stressed that ministry officials have toiled away at the project to guarantee successful development.
The minister affirmed that work on Port EDI has been fruitful, underpinned by strong cooperation from ministry units, including the General Inspectorate’s Department of Information Technology and Public Relations; and General Department of Waterway and Maritime Transport, and Ports.
Chanthol said his ministry is focusing on internal resource development, creating and making effective use of trained and experienced officials known for good practices who are deemed able to ensure the stability of operations and contribute to improvements in the technological systems that support ministry services and internal administration.
Logistics and Supply Chain Business Association in Cambodia (Loscba) president Chea Chandara hailed Port EDI as a time-saver and security booster for private companies.
“Currently, all entry-exit navigation procedures take a long time, and are characterised by difficult and complex procedures. But once online, Port EDI will smooth the process and save time, in an efficient and transparent manner,” he said.
Prior to launch in August, the ministry must perform system performance checks, complete the paperwork for Wing and ACLEDA Bank’s services, and carry out other technical tasks. A sub-decree on Port EDI is also in the works, to ensure optimal implementation and easier operational execution that is consistent with the existing legal parameters.
