Agri-tech on top of development plans for Phu Yen

Phu Yen province is earning its first achievements in terms of high-tech agriculture thanks to vigorously restructuring the local agricultural sector.

Phu Yen High-tech Agricultural Park, which started construction in 2016, is on track to become a high-tech agricultural hub for many investors despite some development delays.

Planned with a total area for Phase 1 of 460 hectares with seven functional subdivisions, the agricultural park targets to be the place for sci-tech organisations and enterprises to invest in developing modern technology in agriculture or applying high-technology to produce agricultural products with high productivity, quality, and added value.

The province has invested in modern facilities and infrastructure for the park to meet the investors’ demand. To date, the construction of six components of the park has been implemented with the total investment capital of $22.6 million. There are 11 investment projects in the park registered at nearly $32.6 million, on an area of nearly 200ha and accounting for around two-thirds of the area for hire.

These projects are operating with total annual revenues of about $38.5 million and profit of $11.47 million, creating jobs for nearly 1,000 local workers.

Phu Yen High-tech Agriculture Zone, where the park is located, was established in 2013 and was one of 10 high-tech agriculture zones inserted in Vietnam’s master planning to 2020, with a vision towards 2030.

Chairman of Phu Yen People’s Committee, Tran Huu The said, “The industry has maintained stable growth with an average annual growth rate of 4 per cent in the period 2016-2020. Production value increased by an average of 4.5 per cent per year, ensuring to achieve the sustainable development targets.”

However, agriculture still has its limits in the area, such as the proportion of livestock and aquaculture in the province’s total economic structure still being modest, while the value of production per unit of arable land is also low, The said.

Nguyen Van Hung, director of the Authority of Phu Yen High-tech Agricultural Park, added that despite much of the infrastructure being completed and investors enjoying numerous special incentives, the park’s development is not as far ahead as expected.

Phu Yen Department of Planning and Investment and the management authority are being proactive in proposing with the provincial people’s committee to develop component projects in the agricultural park in order to make it become a key hub to attract high-tech agricultural projects and a high-quality seed incubating centre for the south-central coastal region.
