Diversified solutions implemented to support farm produce sales

The government has assigned the Ministry of Industry and Trade to support consumption of agricultural products in order to realize the dual task.

Promoting supply-demand connections

Fruit harvest season has begun in the southern province of Long An, but the locality is implementing social distancing due to the resurgence of Covid-19. To help farmers sell their produce, the Long An Department of Industry and Trade has provided the Ministry of Industry and Trade’s special working group with a list of suppliers. The group has contacted large distribution channels, such as Aeon Vietnam, Bach Hoa Xanh, Big C and Co.opmart, which have placed Long An dragon fruit on supermarket and store shelves.

Social distancing and isolation are hampering the marketing of agricultural products in the southern provinces, with many wholesale and people’s markets closed until further notice. Hotels, restaurants and collective kitchens in industrial zones have also suspended operations, resulting in declining demand for agricultural products and fruits.

The special working group has coordinated with local departments of industry and trade to work with distributors and retailers in order to promote consumption of agricultural products for a number of provinces in southeast and southwest regions.

Specifically, MM Mega Market has selected four suppliers to buy local agricultural products during their harvest season. Bach Hoa Xanh has supported consumption of 132 tonnes of corn, 120 tonnes of longan and 50 tonnes of dragon fruit, while VNPost has helped 13 southwestern provinces consume 30 tonnes of longan.

According to a Bach Hoa Xanh representative, through supply-demand connections implemented by the special working group, purchasing groups have come to the provinces of Long An, Dong Thap, Tien Giang and Soc Trang to buy agricultural products and fruits, helping relieve the pileup and supply areas with high demand, such as Ho Chi Minh City.

E-commerce floors deliver agricultural products to consumers in a timely manner

Taking advantage of e-commerce

Given the complicated developments of the Covid-19 pandemic in Ho Chi Minh City and southern provinces, the Vietnam E-commerce and Digital Economy Agency under the Ministry of Industry and Trade has urgently coordinated with major e-commerce floors to ensure sufficient supply of agricultural products, food and essential goods.

The “Stable food” program is one of Shopee’s initiatives in collaboration with the Vietnam E-commerce and Digital Economy Agency to serve the essential needs of Ho Chi Minh City citizens. The program provides seasonal fruits and vegetables, clean vegetables according to VietGAP standards, and fresh and imported meat. In addition, Shopee also subsidizes shipping fees for local residents. The program has engaged the interest of consumers, reducing pressure on the traditional distribution system.

Tiki has increased the goods supply focusing on essential products, such as fresh food, masks, hand sanitizer and dried food (cakes, candies and instant noodles), while joining the “Moving food to stabilize prices” program, an initiative of the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Industry and Trade on coming together to supply essential goods and food.

The e-commerce platform Voso.vn of Viettel Post has also worked with agricultural product suppliers in the provinces of Lam Dong and Binh Thuan to open new stores supplying fresh produce, such as vegetables and eggs, for the southern region.
