Quang Nam Province adds value to rural industrial products

The south central province of Quang Nam is adding value to its outstanding rural industrial products by mobilizing capital for a production and trading model consisting of all stages from production to trade promotion.

One such product is banh chung, square glutinous rice cake filled with green bean paste and fat pork. The banh chung made by the Ba Ba Hoi establishment in Tan Thanh Ward of Quang Nam Province’s Tam Ky City, was recognized as an outstanding rural industrial product of the central region and the Central Highlands in 2020, and has attracted a growing number of consumers in the region.

Ba Ba Hoi owner Huynh Thi Thu Thuy said her company makes 4,500 banh chung a month at a price of VND30,000-50,000 per unit, earning a profit of VND20 million and providing jobs for seven workers with a monthly salary of VND4 million per worker.

Last year, Quang Nam recognized 20 outstanding rural industrial products. According to the provincial people’s committee, candidates for such recognition have been increasing and Quang Nam is encouraging more businesses to send more entrees to contests.

Outstanding rural industrial products are subject to the provincial department of industry and trade’s preferential policies. However, according to a representative of the provincial center for industry and trade promotion and border crossing management, most outstanding rural industrial products are not competitive and poor in design.

Quang Nam is helping producers add value to outstanding rural industrial products by mobilizing capital to help them license their products, lease land and/or workspaces, apply for investment incentives, implement and develop marketing, find markets and partners, participate in trade fairs and exhibitions and implement other product promotion activities, join business associations and cooperate with other businesses and organizations.

Quang Nam is also mobilizing capital for construction of technical demonstration models, technology transfer and provision of science and technology consulting services to help producers improve capacity, quality and competitiveness.

Despite progress made in promoting such products, the provincial center for industry and trade promotion and border crossing management says Quang Nam’s industry promotion sector needs more financial support from the Ministry of Industry and Trade and the Ministry of Finance. The center has proposed that relevant authorities simplify administrative procedures so industry promotion projects for rural industry development can be implemented efficiently.

Since early this year, the provincial center for industry and trade promotion and border crossing management has been improving and preparing plans to implement 2021 industry promotion projects, including outstanding rural industrial product development projects.
