PetroVietnam strives for scientific research breakthroughs

Vietnam National Oil and Gas Group (PetroVietnam) strives to develop the oil and gas industry into the country’s most important economic-technical sector by finding solutions and technologies for oil and gas exploration, exploitation, and processing.

Criteria for scientific research

The oil and gas industry has recorded some significant achievements in recent years, including researching and developing technology to exploit gas condensate fields in the particularly complex conditions of the Vietnamese continental shelf; researching and developing technology for design, construction and installation of oversized marine oil and gas projects suitable to Vietnamese conditions; and researching and applying technological solutions for gathering, processing and using associated petroleum gas in the fields of the Vietnam-Russia Joint Venture (Vietsovpetro) and neighboring fields.

At the conference on long-term scientific research program for the 2021-2025 period

At a conference on long-term scientific research program for the 2021-2025 period held on April 22 in Hanoi, a representative of the Group's Safety Technology and Environment Department presented a report on long-term scientific research programs for 2021-2025 period including principles and criteria to identify and evaluate the programs and results.

Six key programs

At the conference, the leaders of PetroVietnam and representatives of the specialized departments agreed on a list of six key long-term scientific research programs for the 2021-2025 period, including:

(I) Supplementary basic research and application of new technologies to evaluate potential and increase oil and gas reserves and advanced technical solutions to develop and exploit oil and gas fields.

(II) Research, production development, storage, transportation, distribution and efficient use of hydrogen.

(III) Development and application of technologies to recover, store and use carbon dioxide (CO2) in the Group's production facilities.

(IV) Development of production and application of new chemical and petrochemical products, advanced materials and clean fuels from domestic raw materials, with high export potential and profit margins.

(V) Research and evaluation of the impacts of renewable energy development on the Group's development strategy and responsive solutions.

(VI) Research of solutions (mechanisms) and technologies to combine and integrate the business infrastructure of key PetroVietnam products (present and future) in order to increase the Group’s scale, economic efficiency and competitiveness.

President and CEO of PetroVietnam Le Manh Hung stressed that the long-term scientific research program for 2021-2025 period aims to help the Group map out new orientations, respond to changes and develop new key products and services to achieve more sustainable economic development.

In early 2021, three oil and gas industry projects were proposed for the Ho Chi Minh Prize and three for the State-level Prize for Science and Technology by the Ministry of Industry and Trade.
