Workshop promotes media role in promoting sustainable energy
A workshop held March 17 in Hanoi dealt with the launch of training course on “Strengthening the role of media to promote sustainable energy.” The workshop was joinly organized by the EU – Vietnam Energy Facility (EVEF) and the Center for Regional and Urban Studies (CRUS).

This activity was held within the framework of the technical assistance under the sub-component 1B of the EVEF Project. 27 reporters and journalists from various press agencies across Vietnam have been selected to participate in this training.
It is anticipated that the 3 training courses on different aspects of energy journalisms, renewable energy and energy efficiency combined with field trips in Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City and Ninh Thuan will be explored through the duration of the training. In addition, 2 virtual workshops will be carried out with the aim of connecting Vietnamese journalists with international journalists and press to discuss challenges and opportunities in reporting on renewable energy and energy efficiency. Throughout the courses, reporters and journalists will jointly study and discuss on policy, technical and social issues of renewable energy and energy efficiency in Vietnam.
At the workshop, Mr. Sven Ernedal, Project Director of EVEF, said: “The EU – Vietnam Energy Facility is very excited to cooperate with CRUS in implementing this meaningful activity for Vietnamese journalists. After this training, we hope that our journalists will gain valuable skills and knowledge, which later help them to become a reliable information channel to the energy policy makers, government agencies as well as public audience.”
Mr. Pham Tran Hai, CRUS Representative, said: “The Center for Regional and Urban Studies (CRUS) hopes that these training will be a good chance for journalists working in the energy sector, as well as other related ones to improve their awareness and capacity in innovative reporting techniques within the context of various renewable energy projects flourishing dramatically across the country.”
Vietnam is one of the countries with a fast-paced renewable energy development in the world. The trend of renewable energy growth in Vietnam is gradually becoming stable after its explosive initial stage. However, the number of high-quality articles on renewable energy and sustainable energy development is still minimal, which requires journalists to cultivate more specialized knowledge and skills. EVEF hopes that these training will contribute to solving the issues in this field.
CRUS has been selected to be EVEF’s partner thanks to its extensive experience in delivering training to journalists on climate change and sustainable energy. It has successfully organized a journalist competition called “Human and Climate Change” in 2019 with more than 60 articles submitted. CRUS is also implementing the Saigon Energy Hub with the objective to disseminate accurate information on these issues to the general public.
EU – Vietnam Energy Facility is a Joint Technical Cooperation Project that is co-financed by the European Union and the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), implemented by Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH in close cooperation with the Ministry of Industry and Trade. The aim of the Project is to contribute to the enhancing of governance of the energy sector with a view to facilitating the shift to a more sustainable energy development path in Vietnam. The Project will also contribute to the implementation of the regulatory framework needed to achieve Vietnam’s commitment to reduce its energy‐related green gas emission in the context of the Vietnam’s Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs).
